A Resilient Faith: Japanese American Baptists During World War II

Client/Company: American Baptist Historical Society

Project Description: A Resilient Faith documents the experiences of Japanese American Baptists incarcerated during World War II and the response of the Northern Baptist Convention. The traveling exhibit debuted at the American Baptist Churches USA Biennial Summit in July 2025 and will tour the country at churches, cultural organizations, and educational institutions. A companion online exhibit allows users to explore the themes in greater depth.

Julie’s Role: Exhibit Developer / Copyeditor

I joined forces with Johanna Goldfeld of exhibitista creative to create a traveling exhibit for the American Baptist Historical Society. My main role was to provide guidance to ABHS’s small but knowledgeable staff throughout the conceptual and development phases.

After getting a sense of the overall storyline and key players, I helped streamline the exhibit themes, topics, and stories and created an informational hierarchy to organize the content. The space limitations of the traveling exhibit required tightening the narrative, but I also looked for opportunities to expand stories through the online exhibit.

I collaborated with the client team to identify images and documents from their collection to best convey the stories. As the content experts, ABHS wrote the majority of the script. I established writing guidelines and reviewed and refined the content at each step of the way, making recommendations for clarity and flow. As Johanna began graphic design, we worked together to assess the layout of the exhibit panels based on the content.

Although ABHS planned to build the online exhibit themselves, we were contracted to help them through the content, functionality, and graphic design process. After a conversation with the client team, I outlined the functionality of the website, including special features and navigation, to guide future graphic design and implementation.
